Post-viral recovery

As a nutritionist I am interested in food or food compounds that can help inoculate us from disease. We all know that Covid protection has become a vital part of the global medicine defence system. If you've been experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of appetite
  • Joint pain
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty in digesting
  • Hair loss
  • Sore tongue
  • Tingling in soles of feet

...then here are some tips that might help alleviate lingering symptoms after a bout of Covid or having had a vaccination for Covid.

In order to break down toxins (including chemicals and microbes) your digestive and immune systems need bolstering with some important compounds. I have had some good results from post viral symptoms (although other compounds are necessary for recovery) with these two vital food compounds in particular. Here’s an explanation of what they do:

Sulphur contains Amino acids (Methionine)

These amino acids are responsible (among other aminos) for detoxifying xeno-agents (chemicals and microbes) from the liver; maintaining cellular energy levels and healthy neurotransmission. When the body is up against very pernicious viruses the liver needs constant support to continue breaking down these dangerous agents from the body. So sulphur containing amino acids, which detoxify, are needed in higher doses than from a normal diet.

Read this site for an understanding of the bio-chemical process of methionine.

Please note that Methionine should not exceed 800mg p/day as a supplementary dose - it needs to be supplemented along with the other amino acids and in concert with the the B-vitamin complex. You can find out more here.

Bioflavonoids (Quercetin)

Bioflavonoids, especially Quercetin, have been researched and found to be effective in stopping the replication of viruses (Epub 2020 Oct 9. PMID: 33034398; PMCID: PMCch. 7675685) by inhibiting the particular enzymes that bind and reduce viral replication. There is also research evidence which finds quercetin to be anti-oxidising and anti-inflammatory. (Pagan et al.1994)

You can obtain these natural products via powder and tablets from reputable health food providers. Particularly Bioconcepts. Discuss with your Healthcare Professionals or seek naturopathic advice for the appropriate dosage. There is no reportage of Quercetin being toxic at high doses. (Osiecki.1998)
